My Agenda
PORTLAND ON THE RISE:
Ralph Carmona’s Top Priorities
- Livable wages, more jobs, and sustainable economic growth. I will seek how best to leverage Portland’s diverse and competitive assets in ways that will increase revenues and wages while avoiding tax increases.
- Quality of our life. Portland is a “city of joy,” and a joyful city is a successful city. This is why Forbes has declared Portland America’s most livable city. Quality of life involves my pledge to elevate the greatest investment we can make, which is in our human capital: The education, health and welfare of us in Portland — as well as our physical capital of public transportation, walkable neighborhoods and a greener infrastructure. Quality of life means maintaining our high safety standards, making creative our increasing diversity, and keeping Portland clean and welcoming.
- Mayoral leadership and listening. As mayor, I will need your ideas and welcome your reviews and challenges so that we can do what is best for Portland. Portland is Maine’s economic engine. I will advocate for Portland’s best interests in Augusta, in Washington and across the nation.
WHY WAIT?
I want to be mayor of Portland, but I didn’t need a campaign to be an effective and active advocate for the city and its best interests.
Economic growth…
…publicly testified in support of projects like that $100 million Forefront at Thompson’s Point, the $33 million Civic Center innovation bond measure, and Avesta’s affordable housing projects
…publicly critical of allegations related to the Governor’s commitments to Portland’s Waterfront fishing industry
…In April, became only critic of Governor to privately meet with him on issues related to his proposed budget impacts on Portland.
Quality of Life…
…Will utilize 40 years of experience to lobby the city council for an expeditious completion, in quality and sustainability, projects to grow in quality our local economy to offset state and federal impacts on Portland’s city budget
…partner with local, regional, state and federal level associations and office holders to invest in our human and physical capital and make Portland the lighthouse for urban America.
Mayoral Leadership…
… reaching out to Portlanders every day, listening to their concerns, engaging in conversation
…is accessible, transparent, responsive and will use a prudence and temperament reflective of a diverse background to focus on what is needed for Portland and how to get there.
Carmona will get things done…
…will not wait for 14 years of study to get a Civic Center Renovation Bond measure on this November’s ballot – a classic example of what is needed
…how we get there explains why Carmona was the first first candidate to publicly support the measure.
